Each class is 75 minutes

Number of students anticipated:
50

Which Librarian would you like to lead instruction?:
Diane Duesterhoeft

What citation style are you asking your students to use?:
MLA

If a copy of the assignment is not available please briefly describe the assignment below.:
The majority of these students are freshmen and sophomores. This is basically a business communications course. Students will do an audience analysis assignment that will require some research as well as individual presentations that they will research. I want them to realize that the library search capabilities are very robust and are far more likely to provide them with valid and reliable information. I hope to include a discussion about the pros and cons of using popular search engines in their research. If they do use AI results, they need to know how to cite them.

What skills do you expect the Librarian to teach during the session?:
Defining/narrowing a Topic, Search strategy/infoseeking, Evaluating Sources, Bibliographic/Citation assistance

What is the topic students will be searching?:
For their persuasive speech assignment, they will be asked to identify an issue or cause that is meaningful to them (no politics, guns or abortion). They will then need to help their audience understand the scope and scale of the issue, including supporting facts and figures, and then persuade the audience as to why they should consider learning more about the issue, making changes that might help to minimize the problem, volunteering or financially supporting the cause.

Please provide a copy of your course's syllabus.:
prin%20of%20bus%20ii%20syllabus%20spg%2026.docx

What do you want students to be able to do by the end of the session? (Desired Learning Outcomes):
Convince the students to begin their presentation research using the Blume library resources. If they support that effort with other online research, I want them to be able to identify credible information sources and use them wisely. They will also need to know how to create a works cited page which will be due with their speech outline.
